“Us Again,” directed by Brad Simonsen (associate producer on “Big Hero 6” and the Oscar-winning “Zootopia”) and executive-produced by Jennifer Lee, Disney Animation’s chief creative officer, is the first theatrical short since “Inner Workings” premiered in front of “Moana” in 2016. As reference choreographers, award-winning dancer-choreographers Keone and Mari Madrid (who have worked with Billie Eilish and Justin Bieber) were used. Disney created an animatic using a video reference of their choreography, which served as the foundation for the animation. The rain was recreated in Houdini, and the crowd team filled the cityscape with dancing figures in the background. IMDB
Disney juxtaposed the desaturated aesthetic of Art and Dot’s tiny apartment with the eye-popping look of the New York dance world outside in terms of color pallet. “When it got dark and started raining,” Parrish explained, “we highlighted the neon lights with a ’60s feel.” “Then we got extremely bright with the reflections off the water,” says the artist. And we began to use a lot more turquoise to give it an off-kilter air. As we approached the end of the pier and away from the carnival, we sucked the colors out. We utilized the Ferris Wheel’s shifting light for the moment on the bench when Art learns his lesson and begins to add more saturation.
