From “It’s a Wonderful Life” to “Heaven Can Wait” (and its Chris Rock version “Down to Earth”) to “Ghost” to TV’s “The Good Place,” the idea of having a second chance to express what’s on your mind to people who matter most is timeless and seductive as cinematic fare. Despite the fact that “Afterlife of the Party” is treading rather safe ground, it fails to emotionally connect. Cassie’s moments of truth with the people on her list are superficial and hasty, notably the one with her mother, whom she has a profound resentment. It’s full of awkward smiles and frantic pacing, as if everyone is rushing to finish and get home. The eventual reunion between the two parties. IMDB
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, starring Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, and Tony Leung, will be released this week by Disney and Marvel. Unlike Black Widow, the picture will only be available in cinemas and will not be available for rent or viewing on Disney Plus – welcome to the new global order. That isn’t to say there aren’t lots of other terrific new VOD and streaming releases to see this weekend.
